When you buy garlic in bulk, the size grade decides the price, how many bulbs fit in a bag and who you can sell it to. This guide explains the main grades we grade and supply at Pahal Traders, Krishi Upaj Mandi, Mandsaur.

The garlic grades at a glance

Grade

Size

Typical use

Bom (desi)

41+ mm

Our largest bulbs, for buyers who want jumbo size

S.Kumar

36-40 mm

Suited to bulk selling in APMC mandis

Maharaja / Laddu

36 mm

Culinary and wholesale markets; commonly supplied to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala

Extra Medium

28-32 mm

Easy to peel; used by hotels, restaurants and peeling units; popular in South India

Pearl / Pudi

25-28 mm

Peeling, garlic paste, masala and powder

Big Datra (hand sorted)

32-40 mm

Peeling, powder and paste; 5-10% wastage

Small Datra (hand sorted)

25-32 mm

Peeling and garlic paste; 5-10% wastage

How to choose the right grade

  • Selling whole bulbs to retailers or mandis: look at the larger grades such as Bom, S.Kumar and Laddu.

  • Peeling, paste or powder: smaller grades such as Extra Medium, Pearl or Datra are usually the better fit.

  • Always ask how the garlic is sorted and what the wastage is. Our Datra grades are hand sorted with 5-10% wastage.
